PuppEX 2012 is a remaster of Puppy Linux Slacko 5.3.1, released on December 12, 2011. Kernel 184.108.40.206 is used when running the system live, but if you install PuppEX to hard disk, you can use “my” own compiled kernel 3.1.5-puppex instead. PuppEX 2012 uses, like the original Puppy Slacko, JVM, Fvwm95 and IceWM as desktop interface. In PuppEX there are, however, elements of LXDE, such as the file manager PCManFM and LXTerminal. These programs are more useful than ROX-Filer respectively RXVT, I think. The ISO file is on the whole 405 MB, which is due to me including all the necessary additions in order to install programs from source, the extra kernel 3.1.5, Vlc, Gimp and NVIDIA’s own graphics driver 285.05.09. Slacko 5.3.1 is only of 126 MB. PuppEX is despite this still running as fast as the original, which means it runs very, very fast compared to most other Linux systems.
Kernel 3.1.5 is the latest available stable kernel (as of 111215).
Kernel with support for almost anything
If you have a new or/and unusual hardware you should try PuppEX. This is because the system when installed to harddisk can use kernel 3.1.5 with support for “all forms of” now used hardware.
